After long-term operation, the inner wall of the cylinder of a large reciprocating compressor will experience uniform wear or tear grooves due to the friction of the piston ring, resulting in a decrease in compression efficiency. Laser cladding is an ideal method for repairing large areas of damage. The core challenge of repair lies in how to achieve hardness matching between the cladding layer and the piston ring material to form an optimized friction pair.
This process adopts two strategies: for the cylinder base (usually HT250 gray cast iron or alloy steel), a moderately hard nickel based or iron-based alloy is melted to increase the surface hardness of the cylinder body from the original HB200 to HRC 45-50, ensuring its wear resistance. At the same time, to avoid cylinder pulling caused by hard to hard friction, the matching piston rings are selected or surface treated with softer materials, with hardness controlled at HRC 22-26.
This "one hard, one soft" friction pair design not only ensures the wear resistance of the cylinder itself, but also ensures that wear mainly occurs on the easily replaceable piston rings, protecting more valuable and complex cylinders for repair. The repaired compressor can effectively restore its displacement and energy efficiency, and significantly extend its operating cycle.
