Laser cladding of engine transmission shaft

As the core component of power transmission, the fatigue performance of the transmission shaft directly affects the reliability of the entire machine. Evaluating the fatigue life of the shaft neck or spline after laser cladding repair is a key acceptance indicator. This study conducted comparative experiments to deeply analyze the influence of the cladding layer on the fatigue performance of the substrate.

A laser cladding layer (made of Fe based alloy) was prepared on a transmission shaft made of 40CrNiMoA steel, followed by high-frequency fatigue testing and torsional fatigue testing. Metallographic analysis shows that the fusion layer and the substrate have a defect free metallurgical bond, and the heat affected zone is narrow. More importantly, the fine grain structure formed by rapid laser cooling and the residual compressive stress on the surface effectively suppress the initiation of fatigue cracks.

The experimental results show that the fatigue life limit of the transmission shaft repaired by laser cladding is about 15% higher than that of the unrepaired substrate material, fully meeting or even exceeding the design specifications. This overturns the traditional notion that 'repaired parts are not as good as new ones' and proves that laser cladding remanufacturing can achieve' performance enhancing 'repairs.
