Laser cladding of throttle valve

In oil and gas wellhead equipment and pipelines, the throttle valve core is subjected to high pressure differentials and severe erosion from multiphase flow media, resulting in rapid failure. Simple metal materials are difficult to meet the requirements of long-term service. Laser cladding of metal based tungsten carbide composite coatings is considered one of the most effective means to solve this problem.

This experiment uses nickel based self melting alloy powder mixed with 35% -40% spherical cast tungsten carbide particles on the valve core substrate for laser cladding. Laser energy fully melts nickel based alloys and forms metallurgical bonds with the matrix, while firmly embedding tungsten carbide particles without complete decomposition. The obtained composite coating is essentially a 'hard ceramic particle reinforced metal matrix composite material'.

Tested on a high-pressure gas sand jet erosion test bench, the erosion resistance of the laser cladding tungsten carbide composite coating is twice that of the supersonic flame spraying (HVOF) coating and more than five times that of the traditional Stellite 6 surfacing valve core. Its excellent performance significantly extends the maintenance cycle of oil and gas field throttle valves and reduces operating costs.
