Broken tooth repair of 17CrNiMo6 gear: Dow precision forming technology

CrNiMo6 gear is widely used in the transmission system of heavy machinery such as metallurgy, hoisting and mining due to its high strength and toughness. In the process of bearing huge load and impact for a long time, this kind of gear is very easy to break the gear. However, the welding performance of 17CrNiMo6 material is poor, and the traditional welding repair method cannot guarantee the repair quality. After repair, the bearing capacity of the gear is insufficient and it is easy to break again. Most enterprises can only replace the gear with a new one, and the cost is high. The Dow Laser Cladding Equipment established an accurate process parameter prediction model based on the response surface method for the broken tooth repair pain point of 17CrNiMo6 gear. Through a large number of tests and optimization, the optimal process parameters were determined: powder feeding rate of 2.7r/min, laser power of 1844W, scanning speed of 311mm/min, which can realize the accurate forming of the broken tooth and ensure that the repaired tooth profile is highly consistent with the original tooth.

During the repair process, the equipment shall conduct accurate machining pretreatment on the broken tooth part to remove the fatigue layer and defect structure, and then use the layered cladding process to stack cladding materials layer by layer, with the cladding thickness of each layer controlled at 0.15mm, so as to ensure the cladding layer is dense and free of defects. The gear surface hardness uniformity error after repair shall be ≤ 3HV, and the bearing capacity shall reach 92% of the new parts. The rolling mill drive gear of a metallurgical enterprise adopts 17CrNiMo6 material. The gear is broken due to accidental impact. It costs 850 thousand yuan to replace the gear, and the supply period is up to one month, which seriously affects the production. It took only 3 days to complete the repair work with the Dow laser cladding equipment, and the repair cost was only 15% of the replacement gear. The repaired gear has operated safely for 15 months without any secondary fault, which effectively guarantees the continuous and stable production of the rolling mill and avoids major production loss for the enterprise.
