Laser cladding of tunneling machine drill bits

During the rock breaking process, the cutting teeth of the tunneling machine bear extremely high impact loads. The brazing area between the hard alloy tooth head and the steel tooth seat is a stress concentration point, which is prone to tooth breakage or tooth seat wear. Laser cladding technology can not only be used to repair worn tooth seats, but also to enhance their impact resistance through innovative structural design.

This design abandons the idea of simple full coverage fusion on the surface of the tooth seat, and instead carries out "targeted strengthening": 1) At the root corner of the tooth seat mounting hole, a layer of high toughness nickel based or cobalt based alloy is fused, which serves as a stress buffer zone and can effectively absorb and disperse impact energy; 2) In the wear prone area on the outer surface of the tooth seat, a high hardness tungsten carbide composite layer is melted.

This gradient structure design of "inner toughness and outer hardness" has made a qualitative leap in the overall impact resistance performance of the cutting teeth. Underground industrial tests have shown that the tooth breakage rate of the cutters processed by this scheme is reduced by more than 60% compared to ordinary products, greatly improving the continuous operation capability and economic benefits of the tunneling machine.
