Ship propulsion shaft is the core component of ship power transmission. It not only bears huge torque and bending moment when immersed in seawater for a long time, but also resists strong corrosion of seawater and attached erosion of marine organism. Journal wear and corrosion pit are common failure types. The repair layer formed by traditional repair processes (such as electroplating and brushing) has weak bonding force with the substrate, easy to fall off, limited corrosion resistance, short service life after repair, and frequent repair will seriously affect the navigation safety and operation efficiency of the ship. Aiming at the marine corrosion environment of ship propulsion shaft, the Dow Automation Laser Cladding Equipment has customized the Inconel 625 alloy double-layer cladding scheme. Inconel 625 alloy has excellent seawater corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high strength performance. After being certified by BV of Classification Society, the cladding shear strength is over 300MPa, completely meeting the use requirements of ship propulsion shaft.
In terms of repair process, the equipment adopts cold working cladding technology without subsequent heat treatment, effectively avoiding the deformation of the thrust shaft caused by high temperature heating. For two φ 200 × 8535mm thrust shafts of an automobile carrier, several corrosion pits with a depth of 0.8mm were found at the journal due to seawater corrosion, and the wear was up to 0.5mm. After being repaired with Dow laser cladding equipment, the surface roughness of the journal Ra ≤ 0.4 μ m and the straightness error ≤ 0.03mm, which were completely restored to the original design accuracy. The 18 month ocean test showed no signs of corrosion and wear at the repair site, and the service life was doubled compared to the traditional repair process. The repair cost of a single propulsion shaft is only 35% of that of a new shaft, and the two shafts save more than 1.2 million yuan for enterprises in total. Meanwhile, the repair cycle only takes 7 days, which is far shorter than the 30-day cycle of replacing a new shaft, effectively guaranteeing the normal operation of the ship.
