Which should be chosen for surface strengthening of molds between laser cladding and electroplating repair?

Laser cladding and electroplating are two common methods for surface strengthening of molds, with significant differences between the two. In terms of performance, the laser cladding layer is metallurgically bonded to the substrate, with a bonding strength of 500-700MPa and an adjustable hardness of HRC50-68; The electroplated layer is physically attached, with a bonding strength of only 50-100MPa and a maximum hardness of HRC40, making it prone to detachment. After laser cladding strengthening, the service life of a certain stamping die reaches 120000 times, while electroplating strengthening is only 30000 times. From an environmental perspective, the electroplating process generates chromium containing wastewater, which has high treatment costs and is prone to exceeding standards; Laser cladding has no pollutant emissions and complies with national environmental policies. A certain mold factory was rectified due to electroplating environmental issues and successfully passed the environmental impact assessment after switching to laser cladding. From the perspective of applicability, laser cladding can repair molds with wear amounts of 0.05-5mm and also strengthen new molds; Electroplating is only suitable for minor wear (≤ 0.1mm) and cannot repair cracks. In terms of cost, the initial investment in laser cladding is relatively high, but the long-term comprehensive cost is low; The initial investment in electroplating is low, but the lifespan is short and the environmental cost is high. Overall, laser cladding is superior to electroplating in terms of performance, environmental friendliness, and applicability, and is the mainstream trend for surface strengthening of molds.
