Comparison between High speed Laser Cladding Technology and Traditional Process for Hydraulic Support Column

Traditionally, hydraulic support columns have been treated with electroplating hard chromium technology to achieve surface wear and corrosion resistance. However, the electroplating process generates highly toxic wastewater containing hexavalent chromium, which causes serious environmental pollution. Moreover, the coating is mechanically bonded to the substrate and is prone to peeling under high pressure and impact conditions. High speed laser cladding (HSLC), as a green remanufacturing technology, is gradually replacing electroplating.


High speed laser cladding uses extremely high scanning speeds (usually>100m/min) and extremely small light spots to instantly melt and rapidly solidify the powder, with only one-third of the heat input of traditional laser cladding. The surface of the 27SiMn steel column is coated with iron-based alloy powder, resulting in a dense and uniform coating without pores or cracks. It has a dense metallurgical bond with the substrate, and the bonding strength is more than 10 times that of the electroplating layer.


The comparison results show that the hardness of the high-speed cladding layer can reach HV550-650, and the wear resistance is about 30% higher than that of the electroplated chromium layer; In the salt spray test, its corrosion resistance is more than 5 times that of the electroplated layer. In addition, this technology is pollution-free, has low energy consumption, and is a green manufacturing technology that meets environmental protection requirements. At present, this technology has been widely applied in major coal mining machinery remanufacturing enterprises and has become the preferred process for column remanufacturing.
